1. Augmented Social Cogniton
We are experiencing the new Social Web, where people share, communicate, commiserate, and conflict with each other. As evidenced by Wikipedia and del.icio.us, Web 2.0 environments are turning people into social information foragers and sharers. Users interact to resolve conflicts and jointly make sense of topic areas from "Obama vs. Clinton" to "Islam."
PARC's Augmented Social Cognition researchers -- who come from cognitive psychology, computer science, HCI, sociology, and other disciplines -- focus on understanding how to "enhance a group of people's ability to remember, think, and reason". Through Web 2.0 systems like social tagging, blogs, Wikis, and more, we can finally study, in detail, these types of enhancements on a very large scale.
In this talk, we summarize recent PARC work and early findings on: (1) how conflict and coordination have played out in Wikipedia, and how social transparency might affect reader trust; (2) how decreasing interaction costs might change participation in social tagging systems; and (3) how computation can help organize user-generated content and metadata.
2. Preservation Planning: Planning for Optimal Long-term Digital Preservation Solutions
This tutorial will start with an introduction to the challenges of digital preservation, highlighting the core strategies available to address them. After introducing OAIS, the ISO standard for an Open Archival Informa- tion System, the tutorial will focus specifically on the aspect of creating a sound preservation plan by following a well-defined workflow incorporating documented requirements specification and empirical evaluation of tools. In a series of hands-on exercises, participants will be developing a preservation plan for a specific object collection.
3. A Librarian Interface for FEDORA and Greenstone
This tutorial is designed for librarians, archivists and other digital library content creators and managers who want to build and manage a variety of digital content, either at the personal or institutional level. It will also be of interest to students and researchers, in any area of digital libraries, who are interested in the practical details of building digital libraries. Collections will be built from HTML documents; Word, PDF and PostScript documents; images in various formats; MP3 audio files; MARC records; and more.
Hands-on work focuses on a graphical interface that participants will install as part of the tutorial. Guided by practitioners in the field, this software interface is the result of over a decade of research and implementation. The GUI comes in two varieties: one working with Fedora (called FLI), the other with Greenstone (GLI). The interfaces share a common workflow model, and much of what is applicable in one is transferable to the other. The example collections built will use a mixture of the two interfaces. Standards that promote interoperability, such as OAI-PMH and METS, will also be reviewed and examples demonstrated. For instance, metadata harvested through OAI-PMH will be combined with source documents in Greenstone using GLI. Data exported from DSpace will be ingested into Fedora using FLI via the FedoraMETS format.
4. Poster Session
Poster Session will be held in conjuction with the Welcome Reception. Light refreshments will be served while participants can meet with various poster authors to ask questions or discuss about their projects.
All posters will be in A1 size (portrait).

i-Schools in the region to exchange ideas and information and to provide
a platform to launch collaborative activities across regions that can
include collaborative research projects, students and faculty exchanges,
and distance education. The panel will deliberate on the concept of
iSchools, its guiding principles, vision, mission, goals and objectives,
all of which, will help CiSAP derive the roadmap for its formative
stages of development. The panelists, who have been involved in the
preparation and launch of CiSAP, will give their own views from their
regional demands and perspectives to CiSAP.
